Test principle
According to Henderson-Hasselbalch equation (pH = pK + log[HCO3-]/[pCO2]), it can be considered that pH mainly depends on concentration of HCO3- when PCO2 is less than 0.5Kpa. HCO3- reacts with phenol red, showing a yellow color and an absorption at 546 nm. The absorbance is linear with the concentration of HCO3-, which can be dtermined by comparing with the reference solution.
